In the words of the Saw Doctors – “Where the ocean kisses Ireland and the Waves caress it’s shore” – Mayo is host to some of the Wild Atlantic’s most famous sites, from Croagh Patrick and Downpatrick Head to Keem Bay and Killary Harbour. Mayo has produced some of Ireland’s most famous musicians. It has a varied base of instruments today, but has strengths in Accordion, Flute, Tin Whistle and Fiddle and has emerged as a leader in Harp. However, the rugged island of Achill is extremely renowned for its Piping tradition, which is still very strong. It is often said Mayo has deep roots to the Sean Nós tradition, in dance and playing.
